Saturday afternoon was a work day here. We were completely out of hay and it is hard to find due to the drought. So we had to get Hawk out on the pasture. This required some fence fixing as it does every spring. Tom and Jasmine headed out to work on that and Clint went out to burn the ditch off. Pretty soon the Karly and Melina were out helping, too. I finally headed out with my camera in hand. Hawk was already in the pasture munching on the sweet new grass shoots and chasing Guinness out of the pasture.
He is shedding his winter hair by the handfuls!
In addition to burning the ditch off, Clint burned off a long section in the pasture. This is an area that Hawk uses as a toilet so the grass always gets really long. Horses don’t eat where they poop unlike other pasture animals.
Clint was working hard to keep the fire from jumping the creek.
Inevitably when we burn the pasture or ditch, we always find one or two of these.
This particular snake did need to worry about term life insurance that day. Tom let him go on his merry way.
While Clint was burning, Tom, Jasmine and Karly worked on freeing some of the debris out of the creek.
There are a lot of stones and concrete slabs that were put on the banks years ago to stop erosion that are now resting in the creek. They really restrict the flow.

These 2 rarely work well together. Its great to see it once in a while.

Their efforts paid off! This section had no water movement at all before they removed the slabs.

Tom and Clint also worked on removing some trees that had fallen across the fence when a neighbor cut them down.
Melina spent much of her time playing up near the barn. Hawk scares her just a little bit so she felt safer outside the pasture than in.
It wasn’t until I asked her to go walking with me did she venture in. You just have to love the earmuffs under her thick wool hat!
Once she was safely with me, she became a little ham. She was constantly asking for me to take her picture.
Of course we had some 4 legged help, too. We can’t do anything without that around here.
Guinness tried very hard to pull out this errant sapling.

Our little buddy, Mator, kept us entertained and was a little bit in the way, too.

As the family was finishing up their work, I decided that my ears had had enough of the cold wind and I headed back inside. It wasn’t too much longer and they all followed suit. It was a productive day even if we didn’t get to the garden. There is always next weekend.
