Tomatoes

It has been asked about what kinds of tomatoes we buy and where we get them. We buy already started plants because we really don’t have the room to start them from seed. Last year was the first year that we bought already started tomatoes from a catalog. I wasn’t sure how that would work and neither was Tom. But we wanted to try. They arrived a little worse for the wear but being true tomatoes they snapped out of it with some water and sunshine! We ordered our tomatoes from Jung Seeds. They are located in Wisconsin and they have a nice selection of hybrid and heritage plants.

We will be ordering Tomato Plant Collection #1 again this year. The Big Beef is a hybrid but it is one that does have some flavor to it. However, the Brandywine is an amazing sandwich tomato! They are large and slightly pink in color and have such amazing flavor. The Yellow Brandywine are equally as tasty. The Amish paste were a bit of a disappointment last year. But we found out that all tomatoes struggled last year. So we aren’t giving up on them yet. When I made salsa, I used all of these tomatoes and it made for some tasty salsa. I really urge you to either look for some heritage tomato plants for your own garden this summer. If you don’t garden, buy some heritage tomatoes from your local farmer’s market. I guarantee you will taste a difference!
