When it rains it pours! I received another great tool for teaching children to read. Its called See Me Read and it incorporates old and new ideas. See Me Read is an early reading program that uses several tools to help your child learn how to read. Each tool uses a set of 24 words that are selected by the parent out of a list of 39 possible words.
The Labels are designed to be put on or near that object.
The Reading Cards are portable so that a child can practice the same words that are on the Labels while they are on the go.
The Books, Level One and Level Two, are used to start readers and then challenge them.
Finally, the Writing Pad encourages a child to think about language as well as words.
Now I know that you are thinking that these are not new ideas. And while that may be, they are very good ideas. The best part about the See Me Read system is that the pictures that go along with the words are taken by you, the parent, so that each set is a personalized. By using people and things that your child knows to go along with the key words, it reinforces that word. These personalize learning products are a great addition to a parents resources for helping their child to learn. I have had a chance to use this system over the last few weeks with Melina. Even though I just have a sample kit, Melina is picking up on the words. Soon she will be on her way to reading! I can only imagine how much more quickly she would be reading words if a personalized picture was included next to each word. This is an award winning kit that I encourage you to consider if you have a new reader in your home. Reading is everything when it comes to learning. The early start our kids have with reading the easier school will be for them.

Helping young children practice “sight words” with flashcards is a great idea! This is a “bottom up” (or subskills) approach, though, so you want to make sure you are supplementing it by reading real literature. If you can find children’s books at your library that contain some of the words you are teaching, that will help because your child can read along with you. You have to be very careful to balance teaching subskills (bottom up approach) with enjoying real literature (top down approach). You might also want to get your child to think during reading by asking questions while you read, or asking him or her to predict what a story is going to be about, or model doing these things yourself. Google “traits of a reader” for more ideas.
